Draw Near, Hold Fast, Don’t Draw Back | Hebrews 10

Pastor Grant Barney

Is the Old Testament just an old shadow we can leave behind? Can a believer really fall away? And what keeps us from drifting when the storms of life come?

In Hebrews 10, the author brings his whole argument home. The law was “a shadow of the good things to come.” It was a tutor that shows us our sin and points us to Christ, but it could never make us perfect. The blood of bulls and goats could only remind us of our sin. So a body was prepared for the Son, and “by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” The priests stood day after day, but this Man offered one sacrifice for sins forever and sat down.

Because the work is finished, the invitation is clear:

✔ Draw near with boldness through the torn veil

✔ Hold fast the confession of our hope, because He who promised is faithful

✔ Stir one another up to love and good works

✔ Don’t forsake gathering together, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching

We also face one of the most sobering warnings in Scripture (Hebrews 10:26–31): what it means to “sin willfully,” and why counting the blood of the covenant as common is so serious. Then we hear the encouragement that follows: “Do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.”

If you’ve been drifting, distracted, or falling back into old patterns, this is a call to remember when you first came to Christ and to return to Him with your whole heart. “We are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:39)
